Spirit of Play - Positive Coaching Alliance Generally, HWSC is focused on creating a fun environment for kids to play sports, and to create stronger links in the neighborhood. HWSC has long partnered with the Positive Coaching Alliance to foster a positive environment. Throughout the year, training sessions will be organized to help coaches learn techniques and approaches. A few highlights to remember: Generally stick to the 5 to 1 rule. Five compliments for one criticism. When observing drills, try to highlight what was done right; rather than what was done wrong. Uniforms All Hollywood Soccer Club U7 - U14 players are required to play in HWSC's uniform jersey. Tursi Soccer, on Portland's East side (inside the Rose City Futsal building) sells jerseys and other uniform components. They offer a 15% discount on HWSC gear. Team Equipment HWSC will provide all the equipment (balls, goals, cones, pennies, etc) that you will need to work with your team. Don’t hesitate to contact the Director of Coaching or the President and request equipment that you think you need. All players require shin guards. Report lost or damaged equipment and we’ll see what we can do to replace or repair. Remind players that the club has a supply of cleats for exchange or just for free that the players can use if they damage or grow out of their cleats during the season. We can try to set up a meeting to let them select another pair. Practice and Game Planning Coaching can be challenging! Please reach out to other coaches and to the board for help. Remember that the focus is on fun and teamwork so remember to go easy on yourself as well. HWSC has a repository of practice plans. these should be sent out at the beginning of each season to the registered coaches. Please also support this environment by maintaining a positive outlook on events in the game and practices. Please let the players play, let the coaches coach, and let the referee do their job. We encourage your involvement in club and your ideas and feedback. If you like to challenge yourself, then get more involved with the team or club: Teams often appreciate snacks after the game so consider volunteering to provide these. The club can always use more coaches, board members, and advocates in the community. Scholarships! We also have cleats (see below) and potentially other equipment. SPRING The Spring 2022 season consists of 6 games, no practices. The schedule generally runs from April to May and most games are on Saturdays. FALL Fall registration fees are higher due to the longer season and regular practices. Fall Season generally runs 8 games from the first week of school through the end of October or early November, and most games are on Saturdays. Shin guards are required for all players. It may not be necessary to have long cleat shoes, particularly for the younger ages. Athletic/running shoes or turf shoes can often work as well except in the most water-logged conditions. Please watch for the announcement on the Cleat Exchange. We hold this every year before the season begins. With a large standing stock of soccer shoes your player can donate, exchange, or just find a right-sized set of shoes for the upcoming season. Often the PYSA will offer deals and coupons from athletic supply stores to assist in defraying costs. Health and Safety PYSA has a ‘no jewelry’ policy for games for safety, and players must remove their earrings and other jewelry before the game starts - no earlobe taping, flat plastic earrings or exceptions are allowed! Even under ideal conditions, pierced ears can take a minimum of 6 weeks to heal completely, and often need more time. Removing earrings from newly pierced ears for the duration of a game can lead to pain when they’re replaced, or even worse, closed holes. To avoid the potential heartbreak, discomfort and expense of dealing with pierced ear complications, we recommend waiting until soccer season ends to get ears pierced. And a group ear piercing expedition could be just the thing for soccer friends to wrap up a season. HWSC has a strict concussion policy in accordance with the PYSA policy. Coaches are responsible for implementing the protocol and this may result in a player not returning to the game.
